Waterproofing Your Basement Can Save You Big Time. My wife and I contemplated doing something about our leaky basement for practically 5 years. We didn't use our basement that often so a wee water now and then after a big storm or during the Spring snow melt off didn't of course bother us too much, until the day that we decided to remodel the basement. Upon tearing up the old floor covering we discovered that the padding was covered in mold. Added to our investigation we also found mold within the drywall and parts of the floor that were still damp even though we hadn't had rain for practically two weeks. Added to this we had learned that the spread of mold can crawl straight through your entire house given the occasion as we were lucky that we weren't that severe. Needless to say we needed to do something quickly as this qoute not only was affecting our home but also affecting our health.
Our house is over 80 years old and back then weeping tile or any other drainage or water security methods simply were non existent. Even though we live on a hill and all of our downspouts from the eaves troughs were far away from the house the water was still looking a way down to our foundation. Ultimately we decided to call in a pro and this was the best decision we ever made. A amount of companies came out to diagnose our qoute and the majority consensus was that we needed to dig up nearby our entire home down to the footings, insert weeping tile, water proof the base of the house with tar and thick commercial liner and then seal it off at the surface. We also had a few companies who specialized in fixing the qoute from the interior recommend that we install interior drainage and dig a trench nearby the perimeter or our interior wall to capture the water once it entered. This didn't make too much sense as it of course didn't stop the qoute at the source and it was only marginally economy that digging up outside. Long story short: We went with the surface fix and it's now been 5 years and we have had no water issues what so ever. We ended up spending ,000 to dig up three sides of our house to have it properly waterproofed. I will have to admit that I was reluctant to spend this much money on something that you can't even see like a bathroom renewal or landscaping but by far was it the best investment we have made thus far with our home. Every time it rains we are now rest assured that we are 100% dry and especially having children this is very important to us given the potential for mold.

Best of luck in all of your future renewal projects.
