What is Toxic Mold?

Toxic mold, or Stachybotrys Chartarum, is a increase that thrives on humidity and moisture. It grows especially well in porous materials such as carpet, dry wall, fiber board, ceiling tiles, and insulation. It is not as prevalent on metals, concrete, and hard plastics.

The mold grows where moisture is present and thrives when the humidity stays high. Mold can often be found when flooding occurs, or if a construction has leaky pipes or is otherwise not well maintained.

How Can Mold Harm You?

Mold can be dangerous in one of three major ways: when breathed in, when ingested, or when touched. Mold spores have the quality to get airborne, and thus simply being in the vicinity of mold for extended periods of time can be dangerous.

That danger increases if you come in direct contact with, and if you happen to touch your eyes, nose, mouth, etc after having contact with the mold.

The three main repercussions of mold exposure are allergic reaction, Voc irritation, and disease.

Allergic reaction is exactly what you would expect - itchy eyes, runny nose, cough, throat problems, etc. Unfortunately this can often be mistaken for other allergic reactions and won't immediately cause concerns about mold.

One thing mold can do though is cause Voc irritation, which stands for vaporing organic compounds. The mold spores are quickly recognized by the immune theory as hazardous, and can finally follow the nervous system. Side effects of Voc are dizziness, headache, loss of sensation, and loss of focus.

Disease and serious infection can occur from needful exposure, and is an increased risk for people who have weakened immune systems (infants, the elderly, individuals with other illnesses).
